Madeleine : Summer Portraits

The end of summer is approaching fast. This morning was actually begging me to put on a chunky sweater and start wishing for a wood burning stove. But at least let me savor it a little bit longer, if only through some pretty photos:)

Madaleine is a lovely actress/model studying in theater in Connecticut. She also happens to be our neighbor:) Just before she headed back to the north, she strolled over for a few photos in the fading afternoon light. I love shooting in our yard, if not just for the convenience, but also for the varied landscape and backgrounds that we instantly have available to us. Bokeh goes a long way. Thanks so Madeleine for letting us try a bunch of stuff with you and for being so sweet!

Belle Lumiere Vol. III

I recently had the pleasure of seeing my work in print for the most recent volume of Belle Lumiere. It is a gorgeous film photography magazine put together by film extraordinaire Lexi Vornberg and printed by Artifact Uprising. Included in Volume III are some amazing features including a story on blueberries, an ever so classy vintage swimsuit engagement, a grey sand beach portrait session, a vineyard wedding, and a beautifully sweet family session. I loved looking through the other stories and seeing these amazing photographers work their magic and share the stories behind the shoots. My story features our trip to Tangier Island last summer and includes Horace's amazing Impossible film shots as well. Seeing these photos takes me right back to that weekend and the windy beach and the heavenly crab cakes and the evening rain. I never would have imagined being in a journal alongside these photographers and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to see my photos among these pages. Thank you Belle Lumiere!

Houseplants

 

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love houseplants. They make any room feel like the missing piece was found. No matter how small a plant, a little bit of green just fills that space. Can't get enough. Never will. I have a lot more in my house than are pictured here. My mother and sister make fun of me.

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?

Museum of Natural History - Horace and O looking into an underwater display, reflections on their faces.


A few months ago, Horace started to learn about developing and printing from film and really fell in love with the process. He took a darkroom class for a few months and solidified his understanding of how it all works and even built his own darkroom in a shed in our backyard. I never really had an interest in learning all this (I tend to just send my film to a lab or cvs to get it developed, or have Horace do it for me:), but he finally persuaded me this past weekend. We spent an evening in the darkroom developing a few rolls of black and white 35 mm film, fitting negatives in the enlarger, printing onto photo paper, and passing the paper through different chemicals until it was all ready. We did this over and over again for this photo because of how many facets this one in particular has. The left side of the photo took a specific type of filter on the enlarger than the right side and a different time under the light, so it took a little bit of work to get it where I wanted it. Horace is a great teacher and really walked me through the process until I understood it. I'm really happy with how this one turned out and I am excited to work on another print soon.

Matt + Kirsten

 

Way back when, I got the chance to photograph Matt and Kirsten when they got engaged. A few months later, it was even more of a delight to see them get married and to get to be a little part of their day. The wedding was beautiful and the reception just blew me away. A few balcony toasts, the perfect summer string lights and whoopie pies made by the bride and groom were just a few of the amazing details of the night. The reception overlooked the water and made for the most beautiful evening of mingling and dancing. Such a beautiful wedding.
