practice

I'm no good at drawing and my handwriting looks the same as it did in 5th grade. I love beautiful handwriting and would really like to learn how to make beautiful words on paper. Horace got me a beautiful calligraphy pen for Christmas and I've been playing around with it and its really easy to make anything look at least a little bit better with it. So while I was practicing with the pen, I decided to write out a poem and as I was writing, I realized that this poem would be totally different were it written in perfect script with ornate letters. I imagined Williams writing it as a quick note before he headed out the door late for work, scribbling and hurrying to go. So I wrote it out that way. And it works to my advantage that I am unpracticed, at least for this poem:)

Any ideas for how to practice script/calligraphy? I would love some advice!

  5. This is a lovely poem! I personally love your handwriting. Reminds me of how an poet from some history book might write. I have recently fallen in love with calligraphy and love finding all sorts of inspiration to have fun with it.

  6. Three things... I think there are calligraphy classes you can take online, but I'm not sure of which ones are the best. Two, check out this post... http://jonesdesigncompany.com/create/how-to-create-fake-calligraphy/ And three, always remember that good handwriting takes a LONG time... You have to be okay with being SLOW writer... but you can do it! :)

  7. Slow and steady is the way to go ... I think sweet cursive does take some time. My mother had great script but she was very deliberate with her pen. Me? I'm faster so I print more often, and though it's a little messy, I like to think of it as artistic.

    Lovely blog!

    1. Deliberate seems to be the way to go:) Artistic script is so intriguing and personal and I love it when someone has a completely unique way of writing.

  8. Love that poem and I think your handwriting is pretty cool!
I was forced to take penmanship courses when I was young, which I totally didn't appreciate at the time but looking back I'm grateful for the torture. =)
I don't follow the rules I learned, but it did help with the whole visually appealing part.
It's funny how people admire pretty handwriting. It really doesn't mean anything at all,
except I guess it can be considered art, in some odd way. =)
I hope you achieve your goal of learning to use that new pen of yours!

  10. Hi Jennifer, Cindy here, Owen's greatgrandma's neice- Jana and Joey's 1st cousin. I, as well, have 5th grade style handwriting. What about writing down the names of all the books you've read as practice?

    1. Hey Cindy! Its so good to hear from you:)

That is such a great idea. I found a really neat cover of "The Old Man and the Sea" (one of my favorites) and copied that one and it turned out pretty neat. That seems like a good way to play with different styles on short little projects. Thanks for the idea!
