Field and Foundry Baltimore Dinner

Horace and I were invited by the lovely ladies of Field & Foundry for a dinner celebrating collaboration and creatives in the Baltimore area. We were so flattered to be included in this great mix of fun and like-minded people and really couldn't believe we got to spend our Saturday munching on wild caught salmon and perfect crab cakes.

Field & Foundry is made up of Laicie of A Thousand Threads and Melissa Hope in collaboration with Bing, as a way to bring creatives in the MD/VA/DC area together to enjoy a meal together and connect. The Baltimore dinner took place at The Chicken Box, a renovated shared space in the Station North district. It started with cheeses, salmon and bread, along with the most perfect apple cider as everyone gathered together. Once everyone was there, Laicie led a little workshop on how to make bitters and we all created our own little bottles to take with us along with recipes on how to make our own bitters at home.

We all sat down for an incredible dinner, prepared by Laicie's husband Mark, including crab cakes, more incredible bread, pasta and the most incredible Kale Salad with Fig and Prosciutto (get the recipe on A Thousand Threads!). As we ate, we were treated to a talk by Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr, the creatives behind Idiots Books, all about collaboration. We ended the evening with a game of pictionary telephone in an effort to practice the collaborative spirit Matthew and Robbi described. Needless to say, it was such an enjoyable, relaxing evening and we were so thankful and happy to be a part of it.

Dooby's Coffee - Mt. Vernon Morning

A few weeks ago, I got to join the bakers at Dooby's Coffee to document their morning routine. Katie, the pastry chef, lead me through their process starting bright and early at 5 AM in the gorgeous Mt. Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore. I tagged along for the dozen or so recipes the three bakers were working on and have to admit, my mouth was watering near the end there. They treated me to an amazing blueberry muffin with passionfruit glaze during our bread rising downtime and the Counter Culture Coffee Dooby's serves couldn't have made for a more perfect breakfast.

The morning breezed by with flour and duck fat and walnuts and lavender all making their appearance. The recipe we were following was for a Walnut Sourdough in preparation for a MakeTribe event coming up in the fall (keep your eyes peeled!). After the dough was mixed, it was placed in floured baskets to give it that awesome circular pattern you see towards the end. Thrown into individual Dutch ovens, the loaves spent a good while getting all brown and crispy in the oven, as Katie worked on a few other loaves for that mornings cafe supply. Dooby's offers a bread club where patrons receive a different loaf of amazing bread every week. Oh to live closer. The menu here at Dooby's is just mouth watering, from a caramelized onion and gruyere scone to a Ginger Chicken and Avocado on Ciabatta Sandwich (which I got to leave with:). Following Katie, Kathy and Jean really inspired me to bake more at home, even if my results may not be quite as perfect as theirs. Just the act of kneading dough and having to wait for the rise and the amazing smell of the crust as it bakes is enough to make me stock up on ingredients at the grocery store. But to get that heavenly loaf made by Katie, get yourself to Dooby's soon.
